Nowadays there are a wide range of thatching styles and materials that can be used to create the roof of Bali huts. At East Coast Bali Huts and Gazebos, we supply the very best thatching – original Alang Alang from Bali, handmade with cream stitching. This thatching has a better density than the rods with black stitching and will last much longer, while giving you better insulation.

We also provide certified fire retardant Alang Alang thatching. It provides the same great density with cream stitching, but is completely treated with a fire-retardant product, so every single strand of thatching has been saturated. Non-toxic and approved by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service, it’s a great option for peace of mind.

Maintenance

If maintained properly Bali hut thatching can last between ten to twelve years. After this period, the thatching will show serious signs of wear and tear. If your Bali hut’s roof has holes in it or begins dropping dust, then it’s time to get it re-thatched. If you want to ensure that your thatching last longer, then it’s a good idea to invest in synthetic thatching. At East Coast Bali Huts and Gazebos, our synthetic Balinese thatch ‘FiberPalm’ is guaranteed for 20 years, but it can last up to 50.

Design

Bali huts can be customised to suit your home and personal tastes. You can choose more natural looking Balinese inspired posts and supports, or go for something more modern, such as painted white timber, to match a Hampton style home. Also consider the functionality of your design. Bali hut roofs (better for drainage in more exposed areas) must have a minimum pitch of 35 degrees. If you want a low-pitched roof, opt for a gazebo instead.

We can say “Yes”, we have a safe solution for you. We can offer you CSIRO tested and certified Fire retardant thatching. Still the same authentic quality Alang Alang thatching we import from Bali. Thatching with the cream string, with a good density. However, this thatching has the advantage of being treated with a fire retardant.

Not just a “spray-on” fire retardant, but the thatch had to go through a very thorough process.

I have seen the plant and it is a very interesting process. The thatching is suspended on a track and gets lowered into a “bath”, where the fire retardant is already mixed. Once submerged, the water is then aerated, much like a “spa” bath at home, only on a larger scale. This aeration has the effect that all the thatching gets penetrated, every single strand! Not just a superficial layer. It is a very thorough process! The treated thatching is then removed from the bath and the next batch is ready for treatment. Once all the thatching has dried out it is ready for shipping.

This certified fire retardant thatching has the advantage that your Bali Hut won’t go up in flames if there’s an accident with your B.B.Q.! It will only smolder and fizzle out. This is of course in your daily suburban home setting, not subject to the ferocious firestorms that have set of the hectares of bushfires.

Dark stained decking

Tropical inspired resorts usually favour stained, wooden decking. Do up your outdoor entertaining spaces or pool surrounds with dark timber decking. The origin of Bali huts

Bali huts originate from the Indonesian island of Bali and are characterised by thatched roofs and a bamboo or coconut wood structure. Due to the abundance of these local materials, these huts became a popular structure for Bali’s people. The composition of a Bali hut

The thatched roofs of Bali huts are traditionally made of Alang Alang, a blade-like grass native to East and Southeast Melanesia, India, Asia, Australia, Micronesia, Eastern and Southern Africa. The structures of these huts, on the other hand, are made from either coconut wood or bamboo

Bali huts today

Today Bali huts can be made from a range of different timber, however it must be noted that all Australian timber construction must be treated against termite and borers.
